A host's guide for calls, couches, and group chats

How to host a trivia night online

Hosting trivia online should feel like hosting at a table: you set the pace, everyone plays on their own screen, and nobody installs software before the fun starts. Here is how to run a whole night with Vuxa.

Best for

  • Zoom trivia
  • Discord calls
  • family game night
  • team icebreakers

Why groups use Vuxa

Share the room

Send a room link, show a QR code, or read out a code so players can join from a phone or laptop.

Pick the energy

Use standard party trivia for relaxed play, Knockout for stakes, or Havoc and Quick Race when the room wants speed.

Keep people playing

After one round, Vuxa supports rematches, custom topics, async challenges, and solo practice for people who want more.

Run your trivia night, step by step

  1. Before the night: pick topics and a format

Choose two or three topics that suit the group, such as a general knowledge warm-up, a theme everyone shares and one wildcard. Use a ready-made topic or type your own. Then pick a difficulty from Chill ice-breakers to Expert, and decide whether everyone answers each question together or plays at their own pace.

  2. Decide if you play or present

If you want to compete, join as a player. If you would rather run the show like a quizmaster, use Director mode: you control the questions and the pace, and you stay off the scoreboard so nobody can say the host had an advantage.

  3. Invite players by link, QR code or room code

Start the room a few minutes early and paste the link into the call chat or group chat. People in the same room can scan the QR code from your screen. Guests join in their browser, so nobody needs an account or the app.

  4. Run the rounds on a video call

Keep the call open for the chat and banter while everyone answers on their own phone or laptop. In the Together format you move the room to the next question when everyone is ready, which leaves time for jokes, arguments and "I knew that" moments.

  5. Let the scoreboard do the scoring

Vuxa scores every answer as it comes in, so there are no answer sheets to collect or totals to add up. Read out the standings between rounds to keep the competition alive.

  6. Close with a rematch or a new topic

When a round ends, start the next one with a fresh topic while the group is still in the room. If someone missed the night, send them the quiz as a challenge they can play later.

Host checklist

  • Two or three topics picked, plus a backup
  • Format chosen: answer together or at your own pace
  • You as a player, or the host in Director mode
  • Room link ready to paste into the call chat
  • Screen share or QR code for people in the same room
  • A next-round topic ready for the rematch
